Outreach

Looking at an artistic image of the Milky Way in the Planetarium of the Iziko South African Museum (Cape Town; South Africa)
As a scientist it is my duty (and pleasure!) to promote Astronomy and to engage people in this fascinating field. For this reason I regularly give talks in schools and partecipate in Astronomy-related public events.
Please drop me a line if you wish to invite me for a seminar in your school or association. I will be more than happy to show and explain to you some of the beauties and mysteries of our Universe! Here is a list of the talks I have on offer at the moment
•  Understanding the Universe by looking at the invisible: what infrared light can reveal about the formation of galaxies
•  The Universe and the Cosmic Web (this talk is about the Large Scale Structure of the Universe)
•  Einstein rings in the sky: distant galaxies under the cosmic zoom lens
Below you can find examples of outreach and public engagement activities I have been involved with so far.

Public Engagement

I involved three amateur astronomers of the Gruppo Astrofili Polesani (GAP) in a research project concerning the analysis of the Planck Early Release Compact Source Catalogue (ERCSC). I trained them on how to use the public software ALADIN and the NASA Extragalactic Database to identify star forming galaxies, radio sources and Galactic sources in the ERCSC. The resulting sample of star forming galaxies was used to estimate the local luminosity function of star forming galaxies (Negrello et al. 2013, MNRAS, 429, 1309) and to study their spectral energy distribution (Clemens et al. 2013, MNRAS, 433, 695). The three members of the GAP were added as co-authors to the published papers, thus giving international visibility to their group.
This is me together with the three members of the GAP involved in the project. From left to right: Giampaolo Guarese, Luca Boaretto, me and Giorgio Cosco.
And here are the two published paper with highlighted the names and affiliation of the three GAP members
